Your HVAC system is a complex system that heats, cools or moves your home’s air, depending on the time of year, and generally keeps your home more comfortable. But when one of those parts breaks down, it can cause problems through the rest of the system. Whether your home isn’t maintaining temperature uniformly, your power bills are high or there’s something just not right, there are a few reasons why your HVAC system isn’t operating correctly. Here they are.
5 Sources of HVAC Problems
- The thermostat isn’t working. Though it’s really easy to get worked up and panic when your system isn’t working, a broken thermostat is one of the most common causes of HVAC failure. On the bright side, it doesn’t cost a lot of money or time to fix. Just a quick call to your service company and you can be back on the road to an enjoyable indoor atmosphere.
- You’ve got a dirty filter. Dirty filters can make your blower work harder, requiring more energy to operate and causing wear
and tear on your system. It can also lead to dust and allergen buildup in your home as it is no longer able to remove those contaminants from the air. If you have a permanent air filter, make sure you clean it on a regular basis, typically every month during heavy use. Cheap filters will last a month while more expensive options will typically last 2-3 times longer.
- Unbalanced dampers. Because air is carried through your ductwork, closing the dampers in unused rooms in your home can actually cause cool or hot air to really pour into the rooms you’re still heating or cooling very quickly, drastically changing the temperature. This means you’ll have uneven heating or cooling in your home, making it more uncomfortable.
- Your system is leaking refrigerant. When your air conditioner is running constantly but not producing any significant cold air, it’s often a problem with a leak in your air conditioning unit. These units are a closed system, so if the refrigerant leaks out through a damaged or corroded fitting, it can no longer cool effectively and won’t be able to until the problem is fixed.
- Is the breaker tripped? Though it’s easy to switch it back on, remember that breakers flip for a reason that should be investigated. If there’s a short or problem with the electrical circuit, it can be a serious fire and safety hazard.
