If there’s one thing common to Florida, it’s that allergy season hits hard. Even when outdoor allergies are not being a problem, indoor allergies, such as pet dander, mold and dust mite debris can all wreak serious havoc on your immune system. How do you get your allergies under control in your home? These easy tips will have you smiling and sneeze-free in no time.
7 Tips to Keep Household Allergies in Check
- Don’t dry dust. Dry dusting can actually make allergies worse. Why? You’re stirring up the dust and allergens, putting them back into the air where they can get into your system. Instead, use a damp cloth to dust.
- Vacuum regularly. Dust mites are one of the most common allergies, but vacuuming regularly helps remove their habitat and food supply. Vacuum at least once a week and try to hit your upholstery at least once a month with an appropriate attachment.
- Air your dirty laundry. Washing your linens, pillows and bedding on a regular basis also helps keep allergens under control, whether it’s pet dander, pollen or dust mites.
- Give Fido a bath. To keep pet dander at a minimum, you’ll want to wash your pet at least once a week. Make sure you’re taking the time to vacuum pet beds at the same time, and try to wash their bedding once a month to keep dander at a minimum.
- Toss the harsh chemicals. Did you know that harsh household cleaners can actually make your allergies worse? Try switching to more natural green products or look on the internet for great cleaners you can make from basics like vinegar, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.
- Dry it out. Do you have areas in your bathroom that don’t get dry between uses? Try adding a vent or upgrading the existing vent. Are there pipe leaks or a bad spot in the roof? Mold and mildew allergies thrive in damp conditions.
- Keep your HVAC system serviced. By doing something as simple as regularly changing the filter on your air conditioning unit, you can enjoy better air quality. If you don’t have time, consider a service package with a reliable company.
