History
Although Tampa didn’t begin to grow in earnest until the late 19th century, the area that would later become Florida’s second-largest metropolitan area was first settled in the 1820s. As the site of the Army installation that bore his name, the Tampa area owes its initial settlement to General George Mercer Brooke. Although Brooke himself didn’t remain in Florida for long, the town can trace its roots to the civilian village that sprang up outside of the fort’s walls.
After the discovery of nearby phosphate deposits in the early 1880s, Tampa began to expand outward at a rapid clip. By the turn of the 20th century, the area had been selected to host the Florida State Fair. It also served as a vital port for U.S. forces during the Spanish-American War.
After the highway construction boom that followed World War II, Tampa’s growth kicked into an even higher gear. During the 1960s and 70s, the contours of the modern Tampa region began to take shape. In 1956, the establishment of the University of South Florida earned the city its well-deserved reputation as one of Florida’s leading cultural centers. Today, Tampa continues to attract residents and businesses with its carefree lifestyle and balmy winters.
Geography
Tampa is surrounded by water on three sides. To the west, Old Tampa Bay separates the city from Clearwater, Largo and Pinellas Park. To the south, Tampa Bay separates it from its “twin” city of St. Petersburg. Tampa’s eastern border faces Brandon and Riverview across relatively narrow Hillsborough Bay. Indeed, water is the region’s defining feature. The land on which Tampa sits is generally flat and devoid of distinctive geographical features. The nearest major open area is Hillsborough River State Park.
Population and Demographics
As of the 2010 Census, Tampa’s population was just shy of 350,000. Including the outlying suburbs and the major settlements across the bay, the population of the broader Tampa-St. Petersburg metro area currently exceeds 4.5 million and is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years.
Things to Do and See Around Tampa
As one of Florida’s most tourist-friendly cities, Tampa has a wealth of sights to see. Folks who live and work here rave about their experiences around town as well. Major shopping districts include central Tampa’s SoHo district, the Westshore Plaza Mall and the Hyde Park Village outdoor shopping center. Major tourist attractions include the world-famous Busch Gardens theme park, the Florida Aquarium and the world-class Tampa Bay History Center.
Climate and Weather Conditions
Although Tampa is renowned for the pleasant Gulf of Mexico breezes that moderate its climate, the city does experience severe and changeable weather. During the spring and summer, thunderstorms are a common occurrence. Although temperatures rarely drop below freezing in the city proper, flash frosts have been known to occur in the rural inland areas to the north and east. These events can devastate Florida’s all-important citrus crop. Meanwhile, the six-month period between April and October can be steamy and uncomfortable. In this subtropical environment, air conditioning is an absolute necessity.
