History
Long before the first European explorers arrived in Florida, Native Americans inhabited the area. They obtained fresh water from the naturally clear springs near their settlements and called the area Pocotopsuag, which meant Clear Water. The first Spanish explorers arrived in 1528, and other settlers soon followed. Dr. Odet Philippe, who was a surgeon in the French navy, retired there and built a large plantation on land that is now known as Philippe Park. He is credited with introducing the first citrus trees in the area. In 1842, the U.S. government began offering land to homesteaders who were willing to cultivate the area, and the population began to grow.
First known as Clear Water Harbor, the community was mostly made up of farmers and fishermen. In 1888, the first passenger railroad was built, and as more people began visiting the area, it developed a reputation as a premier vacation spot. To accommodate the growing number of visitors, the Belleview Biltmore Resort was built in 1897. In 1915, the town officially became the city of Clearwater.
During World War II, the city was used as a training base for U.S. troops, and local hotels were converted to barracks. Because the area around Sand Key had not been developed yet, the Army Air Corps used it for target practice. After the war ended, many of the people who had been stationed in Clearwater returned there to live. Today, with its pristine beaches and fantastic sunsets, Clearwater is known as one of the best vacation destinations in Florida.
