• Program it. Programmable and smart thermostats are a great option to use if you’re constantly harping on your family to adjust the thermostat when you leave for the day. By reducing your energy usage when the house is empty, you’re reducing your overall energy bill.
• Get smart. Smart thermostats are not only programmable, they allow you to adjust the temperature remotely from the convenience of your mobile device. That means you can turn it back up when your teens crank the AC down to 50 when they get home.
• Act appropriately to the temperature. If you’re cold, moving around through household chores or exercise can warm you up, but if you’re feeling too warm, take a break and give your body a chance to cool down instead of cranking up the HVAC unit.
• Chow down. Some foods and drinks can cool you down or heat you up. Many people find relief from the heat by eating fresh fruit or vegetables, drinking cold tea or increasing their water intake. Cold weather allows you to warm up with hot drinks, spicy foods, soups and other comfort foods for the colder parts of the year.
