While most people enjoy the arrival of fall weather the constant swings from hot to cold temperatures can frustrate homeowners as they try to keep their homes at a comfortable temperature. To save this frustration, try the following tips, then call Cox Air if you think your home comfort can be improved even more.
- Forget your air conditioner and use ceiling fans. Many people start to feel uncomfortable when the inside temperature reaches the high 70s or low 80s. Instead of turning on the AC, turn on fans instead. Moving air feels about five degrees warmer than still air, and a ceiling fan uses about the same amount of electricity as turning on one light bulb.
- Use your blinds. While you may like to throw your blinds open to enjoy the view on a warm, sunny day, consider keeping them closed during the day if you won’t be opening your windows as well. With your blinds open and windows closed, your home is like a greenhouse and you’ll be forced to run your air conditioner more. Similarly, if your home is just a little chilly during the day, opening sun-facing blinds can save you from having to turn on your heater.
- Don’t open your windows on rainy days. While rain usually brings mild temperatures, don’t throw your windows open either before or after a storm. The high outside humidity will creep into your home and create a muggy feeling that can only be eliminated with a few hours of running your heater or air conditioner.
- Rethink when you use your appliances. During the summer, you probably avoided doing laundry and cooking large meals while the sun was out to cut down on your air conditioning use. Those days when you find your home to be a little chilly might be the perfect time to decide to tackle these chores.
- Don’t forget to turn your heat on at night. Florida has many days that start out freezing and make you want to turn on the air conditioner by the afternoon. Switch back to heating mode before you go to bed to avoid having your pipes freeze.
