Air conditioning provided a major benefit to industry in the early 1900s. After Willis Haviland Carrier created a machine to stabilize the air temperature and humidity at the Sackett-Wilhelms Lithographing & Publishing Company, the printing industry was forever changed. The constant temperature and moisture fluctuations in the air at the factory were causing the paper to expand and contract, throwing off the printing alignment.
The Development of Air Conditioning Services
Because Carrier’s design was able to control temperature, humidity and air circulation, it effectively regulated the comfort level inside the factory. Carrier had figured out the secret to the correlation between temperature, dew point and humidity in the air. He patented his air treatment apparatus in 1906. Although Carrier was not the first person to invent technology to cool air, he was the first to create a safe, effective model.
All of a sudden, the quality of materials produced in factories improved. Food, agricultural, medical and textile industries were able to manufacture higher quality products. In 1915, Carrier and six of his colleagues founded the Carrier Engineering Corporation with a mission to advance air conditioning technology.
Many commercial organizations were taking advantage of Carrier’s invention to keep their factories and machines cool, but it was not until the mid-1920s that people began to use the technology for their own comfort. Three of Carrier’s devices were added to a major Detroit department store, inviting customers in for cool comfort. Movie theaters began to see a boom in customers during the previously quiet summer months. Homeowners wanted smaller units for personal use.
Carrier developed the personal air conditioner in 1928. Called “The Weathermaker,” it gave people a chance to escape the summer heat in the comfort of their own homes. The Great Depression, however, delayed the advancement of air conditioning for private use. Still, at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, Carrier created a futuristic igloo, a 5-story building that claimed to “see the World’s Fair Weather made before your very eyes.” At that time, air conditioning was being used in 99 countries around the world. Many of the other exhibits at that year’s fair featured Carrier’s cooling comfort.
